About ...
Fidonet creates an connection with several computers from hobbyists wich have only one thing have in common, an computer, modem and-/or ISDN adapter. Those hobbyists have made an cheap system to exchange information with eachother. With this system they created 3 methods to exchange information: Netmail: Sending private messages from one to another system. You can see this as our modern email system on the internet. But it can do more, it also is used to send mail to robots like AreaMgr to connect new echomail areas or for fileechos. Echomail: These are the public discussion groups, just like newsgroups on the internet. The most echomail echoes have there own moderator. There are national and international echoes. In the time fidonet was populair in The Netherlands, there where different echoes available. Here are a few samples:
Offcourse is this only an small overview wich was available those days. Now all these areas are obsolete and only a few new general areas are used. Fileechoes: After echomail the fileechoes were developed, wich is an way to distribute files from one to another system. The netmail system is used for distributed, because netmail has the possebility to attach files to the message. With this system you can put the files automatically to your BBS for your users. Like echomail, there are also areas for different kind of software. Here are a few samples:
But there are sometimes also areas for anti-virus software, music, OS/2, Linux en many more.
